July 1, 2006 - Official Launch Date June 25, 2006 We have decided to go with an official launch date of July 1, 2006 whether we're completely ready or not. The site is up and functional and has been, but we have not been able to invest the appropriate amount of resources in pre-launch promotion. Too many other developments currently ongoing, although we hope to create a small window of opportunity early one morning next week to send out a few notices. There is also the decision to make in regards to whether to upgrade the script to the latest version. We're already noticing some traffic and search engine placements even though we've not submitted yet. This is always welcomed news. We hope that visitors and perspective clients understand our philosophy and how we believe that it will benefit all concerned. We welcome any contact in regards to this. Lastly, there are still a few FREE pixel ad blocks still available for those who are interested. Free links never hurt! Kilopixels.com And Our Pixel Advertising Philosophy June 18, 2006 We've received a question regarding our methodologies as it applies to Kilopixels.com, so I'm going to try to better explain our philosophies here and also update the FAQs. Let me start by saying that we are new to pixel advertising (as most are, relatively speaking since it is a brand new medium) although I think that it's a very interesting concept with a great deal of potential.
In short, I liken our approach to that of billboard advertising insomuch as:
b) Billboard advertisements are not permanent
c) Successful billboard marketers place their signs on main thoroughfares
Before we begin a new development we ask ourselves, "would it work on a t-shirt?" - meaning, it's got to make sense, be familiar, be memorable, be relevant and yes, look good on a t-shirt. We believe that kilopixels.com meets this criteria and we look forward to the marketing challenges and the ultimate success of Kilopixels.com. T-shirts coming soon... Why Can't We All Just Get Along?! June 15, 2006 Wow, what a cluster #$*& this has been. I keep the latest versions of Opera (more on Opera later on...) and Firefox on my computer as well as IE 5.5. I do not keep IE 6.x installed as I don't want to take a chance on it corrupting my IE 5.5 install. Additionally, virtually everyone I know has IE 6 and can test for me, or I can test from their location. Well, all of my design edits, and there were quite a few, ALL displayed beautifully on the three browsers on my computer, but upon testing on IE 6 at an associates location I discovered that there was an alignment issues with the toolbar text. This "simple" little issue took nearly the entire day to correct including the travel time. Why on earth the various browser engineers can't agree on some simple standards is well beyond me! It's a web designer's nightmare.
Back to Opera,... Opera is now free and without ad support. I have used IE for many years dating back to the early 90s. I then switched to Firefox a few years back and kept it as my primary browser for several months. Then an associate of mine alerted me to the fact that Opera was going to begin offering their software for free so I gave it a shot. People, please give Opera a try. It's a smaller download than the others, it loads faster and has many of the more popular FF plugins already installed. It just simply provides a much more pleasant browsing experience. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
June 13, 2006 I think that we're just about ready to go live. Finished the FAQ and Terms today and tested on IE 5.5 and Opera. Tomorrow will be IE 6 and Firefox, ughhh, I dread testing FF as there is almost always some sort of little design element that causes issues like having to utilize the valign="top" element in each and every td tag. Also had to spend a little time working on the admin.css style sheet as the combo of pink and green were making me a little woozy. It ain't perfect, but as we say in the south,... "it's good enough for snuff" - just why we say that, I don't know. I think I'll leave here online tonight... June 12, 2006 I was just getting cranking when the idiots from the utility company, who were supposed to be trimming tree branches to prevent them from falling onto the power lines during rough weather, decided to drop a branch onto the power lines creating the blackout they were supposed to avert. Ironic, ain't it? After two hours in the dark and heat the power came back on only to discover that the refrigerator had thoughts to the contrary. After much cussing and brilliantly placed, skillfully delivered kicks, the ol' girl lurched back to life. So much for my day. I was able to get the PayPal mod going, it was much easier than I had anticipated, although I had wanted to setup the IPN feature, but opted against it due to time constraints. Got some more facade work accomplished and the beginnings of an FAQ and Terms page. Hopefully tomorrow will be less eventful and more conducive to work. June 11, 2006 Today I discovered that I indeed had a sendmail problem, although I believe that it's a bug in the script. I registered at the GPix forum and posted a plea for assistance, but never got a reply. Sunday I guess. Anyhow, I did some research and found a resolution by bypassing sendmail altogether and going with PHP mail. It works now, but I lost all opportunity to work on the payment mod. Tomorrow. I performed a few more aesthetic edits today, and altered the grid a bit. Successfully performed some testing. Tomorrow I also plan to create an FAQ and Term page. Pondering whether or not to put up a definition of KILOPIXEL (which is 1000 pixels), but don't want to come across as condescending. Maybe in the FAQs. Also, FYI - I'm using this blog feature as more of a "notes to myself" function as opposed to a journal. It is a cool addition though. Wish they had incorporated a forum. I may do this too. Anything to promote "stickiness". June 10, 2006 Well, registered KILOPIXELS.COM yesterday, setup hosting and edited the DNS. Downloaded the script last night. Today I unzipped the script and uploaded to the server. Then I installed the script using the "wizard". All in all it went really well, just had a slight MySQL database issue that was quickly resolved. The rest of the day was spent getting familiar with the admin features and tweaking the look a bit. I think that I may have a sendmail issue to resolve. Will test again tomorrow. Unfortunately, the GPix website has been down all day, I was hoping to get some documentation. Tomorrow I plan to review my PayPal info and hopefully get the payment module going. |
